Fire spreads to three houses in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WYTV) – Firefighters worked Wednesday morning to control a fire in New Castle that spread to three structures.

Firefighters were called about 6 a.m. to a vacant house on Epworth Street. The flames from that fire spread to two nearby homes, one of which was occupied. Two people living in the house were able to get out without injury. Those two people have been displaced from their homes because of the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

New Castle Fire Chief Mark Panella said he had to do some quick thinking once crews got on the scene.

“Right off the bat, when you have three houses burning and a few guys here, we got to decide which way we are going to attack it first,” Panella said. “So we went the long way and protected the houses down the street and worked our way down.”

Fire department workers have not released any information on an estimate of the damages, nor of the cause of the fire, although Panella said he believes there is a possibility that someone intentionally set the fire.
