YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The two men who police say took part in a deadly riot on Winona Avenue in 2014 learned their fates on Wednesday.
Dequann Fleeton and Rontrell White were sentenced for their part in the shooting death of 17-year-old Shaun Cortez.
More than a dozen people were charged after the riot. Police said Fleeton and White helped to create the riot that lead to Cortez’s death.
White will serve four and a half years in prison. Fleeton was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.
“They didn’t show any remorse. They showed self-preservation. They lied,” said Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Marty Desmond.
The sentences were about half the time Desmond asked.
In October, the court is expected to hear the cases of the men who prosecutors say pulled the trigger.
