STRUTHERS, Ohio (WYTV) – With perhaps a million people attending an open air Mass to be celebrated in Philadelphia on Sunday, local Catholics who are going know there will be a lot of walking involved.
Priscilla Carlucci from Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers says their two bus-fulls will stay overnight in Reading, Pennsylvania, about an hour west of Philly. “The bus will take us as far as it can go, which is about four and a half miles before Benjamin Franklin Parkway'” says Carlucci. “And then we will take the Amtrak, which will take us approximately a half-mile to a mile into Philadelphia.”
They head east on Friday morning. They say hotels closer to Philadelphia are either sold out or very expensive.
Still, the group is excited. “Everybody that calls me says ‘I am so excited. I cannot wait to see the Pope,” says Carlucci.
Another group from Blessed Sacrament Parish in Warren is also going.
Barb Eggleston from Christ Our Savior echoes the enthusiasm of all. “I can’t find the word to really put across the meaning, how I feel,” says Eggleston. “I’m very excited.”
