Student Athlete: Lexy Herman

The Cardinal Mooney senior holds two school records in soccer, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Youngstown, OH (WYTV) – When it comes to high school soccer, you’d be hard pressed to find a more rounded player than Mooney’s Lexy Herman. She passes, shoots, scores, and was good enough to be named All State and All American last year. Plus, her accolades in the classroom are equally as impressive, making her a perfect fit for our Student Athlete of the Week.

“I always love to think about that ball in the back of the net,” said Herman. “It always gets me hyped, so I always want to do that. I’m extremely competitive, so I want to be the best and beat the best.”

When it’s all said and done, Lexy Herman will go down as one of the best in Mooney soccer history. Last season, she scored 33 goals, while dishing out 39 assists, both are Mooney single season records. And those 39 assists were good enough for a single season state record in Ohio.

“I love to pass, I love to make an assist,” said Herman. “I think an assist is just as important as the person scoring so I love to make passes, I love to assist, I think it’s as important as scoring.”

Lexy has led the Cardinals to back-to-back District Titles and is a captain for this year’s team. But she also leads the way in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA.

“I was always taught, school before sports and it’s hard to juggle both but once you get it down and learn how to balance and use your time wisely, it becomes easier. But it’s awesome to do both.”

Lexy is also member of the National Honors Society and Service Club, and will be a four year starter on the lacrosse team come this spring.

“It takes a lot of time and hard work but all the practices that run late and every time you get tired, it’s worth it because at the end of the day at the end of the game, it’s worth winning,” she said.

Lexy plans continue her soccer career in college and eventually become a Physical Therapist. But for now, she plans to enjoy the rest of her senior year.

“That four years goes very fast and you want to do all you can now and be the best you can be.”
