2 Valley schools win U.S. blue ribbon award

COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WYTV) – Two Mahoning Valley schools will be recognized in Washington D.C. for their excellence in education.

Maplewood Middle School in Cortland and South Side Middle School in Columbiana were among 14 Ohio schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2015 by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

More than 300 schools were selected nationwide based on academic excellence.

A recognition ceremony will be held in November.

The National Blue Ribbon Exemplary High Performing Schools Award is given to schools in which all students in the school tested in reading and mathematics are in the top 15 percent of all schools in the state in the most recent year.

Middle School Principal, Dave Buzzard with South Side Middle School will fly to Washington D.C. on November 9 to accept a plaque and flag to signify the exemplary status on behalf of Columbiana Middle School. In celebration of the honor, each student, teacher and staff member will receive a blue ribbon to wear upon in celebration the award.

“In 2009, Columbiana High School was honored as a Blue Ribbon School, so we are very excited to have our Middle School also be recognized as a Blue Ribbon School,” commented Donald Mook, Columbiana Exempted Village School District Superintendent.
