Cortland, OH (WYTV) – Lakeview’s Mitchell Franco has made a habit of proving people wrong. He may not be the tallest, fastest, or strongest player on the football field, but he certainly packs a punch as an All Conference defensive tackle. Plus, his grades also top the charts, making him a perfect fit for our Student Athlete of the Week.
“Well I’m only 5 foot 5 and I weigh only 190 pounds, so that really pushes me, it puts a chip on my shoulder,” said Franco. “People like to doubt me because of that size but I like to go out there, I use my speed and my strength to my advantage against these bigger guys that I go up against and it really drives me to do the best I can do.”
Despite his size, Mitchell Franco has been a consistent work horse for the Bulldogs. He’s a three year starter at Defensive Tackle, and most recently stepped in as the team’s center on offense.
“I love football because there’s nothing like it,” he said. “You go out there, you hit…it’s the only time you can hit someone and not go to jail, that’s what our coaches always say, and I love it.”
Mitchell was named 2nd team All American Conference last season after leading the team with 7 sacks, but there’s more to him than just football. Mitchell ranks Number 1 in his class academically with a 4.0 GPA.
“It’s a lot, there’s a lot of work in it. I mean, you go from football right after school and then you get home at 6:30 and you gotta eat, shower. You got priorities, you got chores…other things you need to do. I just accept the challenge.”
After his senior year, Mitchell plans to study Mechanical or Chemical Engineering in college, and maybe even coach one day.
“People say it goes by fast and you really don’t think about it and then it comes your senior year and we’re already in Week 6 and it truly does go fast. You just gotta enjoy it.”
