Youngstown art gallery hopes to help revitalize downtown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Downtown Youngstown has seen major growth and development over the past 10 years, and on Friday, yet another downtown business opened its doors to the public.

The SOAP gallery at 117 S. Champion St. is the first full-time, for-profit art gallery that the city has seen in more than 20 years. The owners are from the area and are hoping their business will help the downtown area thrive.

Friday’s grand opening was accompanied by an art walk and a small arts festival outside of the gallery.

SOAP Gallery Co-Owner Sarra Mohn said she hopes to hold an art walk each month, all in the interest of sparking more business in Youngstown.

“The art walk will bring people downtown and maybe stop by and then get a bite to eat somewhere and take their kids to Oh Wow!” she said. “It’s just another reason to come downtown. If you can put together a whole evening together in downtown, you’re more likely to come down, and we want to be a part of that stop.”
