Stifling defense, Salem improves to 6-0

SALEM, Ohio (WYTV) – Salem continues to play their smash mouth brand of football as the Quakers are off to a 6-0 start following this evening’s 24-6 win over visiting Carrollton. Salem has held five of their six opponents this season to less than 14 points.

Senior quarterback Matt Weingart connects with Cooper Bezeredi early in the first quarter on a 26-yard strike to give the Quakers a 7-0 lead. Carrollton’s Adam Shaw rushed on a 6-yard score to close Salem’s lead to 7-6. With 4:35 left before the half, Max Righetti kicked a 25-yard field goal through the uprights to extend the Quaker lead to 10-6 at the intermission.

Weingart tossed another touchdown to seal the deal for Salem late in the fourth quarter.

There have been only three area Ohio teams who have began 6-0 who have not advanced to week eleven (2011: Southern, 2008: Girard, 2001: East Liverpool).

Salem will play at home next Friday against Minerva as Carrollton will face Alliance.
