Mercer County District Attorney candidates speak at forum

Mercer County District Attorney forum

SHARON, Pa. (WYTV) – Approximately 50 people attended a forum at Penn State Shenango to hear from two men running for Mercer County District Attorney.

The candidates, Republican Miles Karson and Democratic incumbent Bob Kochems, discussed a variety of issues, including plea bargaining.

Karson said he would like to see more cases in the county go to trial.

“I’m not saying that we should be doing 100 cases a year to verdict, what we need to be doing is we need to be more aggressive. We need to be fair, swift and aggressive and try more case,” he said.

Kochems said the issue is the sentences handed down to those convicted, however.

“We need judges to sentence higher or outside of the guidelines when someone is bad,” he said. “Sentence below the guidelines when someone is better than expected. The issue is not the plea bargain. The issue is how the judge sentences.”

The forum was sponsored by the League of Women Voters.
