Phantoms top Gamblers

YOUNGSTOWN, OH (WYTV)-The Youngstown Phantoms special teams lead the way to an impressive 5-2 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers. Youngstown converted on both of its power play opportunities and killed six of seven Green Bay man-advantages, including a stretch of seven straight shorthanded minutes in the third period.

“Great effort from the guys tonight, and the highest praise for how they handled that stretch of third period penalties. The effort was excellent from start to finish,” said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.

The Phantoms got on the board first when Kris Myllari’s shot was deflected in by Alex Esposito. It was Esposito’s third goal in his last four games. Gamblers’ Captain Sam Saliba would tie things up just over two minutes later, sending the teams to intermission tied at one a piece.

Yushiro Hirano scored his first of two goals on the night just five minutes into the second frame, and would add an empty netter in the final minute of the contest. James Winkler also scored a pair of goals for the Phantoms, including a power play tally that beat Gamblers goalie Adam Huska. Green Bay would pull Huska and replace him with Kevin Reich after Youngstown’s fourth goal.

“We know we are playing our next five games on the road, so it was big to get the two points and a win tonight,” said Winkler.

The Phantoms were able to kill off nine minutes of Gamblers power play time in the third period, including a five-minute major assessed to Youngstown forward Lukas Craggs. Phantoms goalie Ryan Bednard stopped all 11 of Green Bay’s third period shots, and 22 of 24 overall.

“Our penalty kill got better and better as the night went on, the guys did a great job of keeping pucks to the outside. I feel like we keep improving every week which is very encouraging,” Bednard said.

Youngstown will hit the road for five straight games away from the Covelli Centre beginning Friday, November 13th, against the USANTDP U-18 team. The Phantoms will then travel to Chicago for back to back games against the Steel November 14th and 15th.
