Donlan paces Penguins over Colonials

Matt Donlan had 18 points as the Penguins got their 4th-straight win Wednesday night

YOUNGSTOWN, OH (WYTV)-Four players scored in double figures as the Youngstown State men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game beating Robert Morris 65-58 on Wednesday night at the Beeghly Center.

Leading the way for the Penguins, who are now 4-4 on the season, was Matt Donlan who tied his season high with 18 points. Five of Donlan’s six made field goals on the night were from 3-point range and 14 came in the first half. Bobby Hainfinished with 14 points, Francisco Santiago added 12 and Brett Frantz had a career-best 10 points in the seven-point win. Leading the way from RMU (1-7) was Rodney Pryor who scored 20 points.

Sidney Umude and Hain each led the Guins with seven rebounds while Santiago had five assists.

The Penguins led for the 30 minutes of the contest although Robert Morris made them work for the win down the stretch.

YSU built a 49-36 lead with 13:06 remaining and kept the advantage at nine, 56-47, with 8:55 left. RMU scored the next six points to get within 56-53 with 4:54 left. But the Guins defense stepped up and held the Colonials scoreless for the next 3:33.

In the meantime, Hain made a pair of free throws, Jorden Kaufman snapped a nearly seven-minute field-goal drought with a putback at the 2:53 mark and Frantz made a hanger in the lane as the shot clock expired before RMU could score another point.

For the game, YSU shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) while RMU made 21-of-53 shots (39.6 percent).

The first half saw six lead changes and just one tie, but they all happened within the first five minutes of the game.

Robert Morris got out the gate quickly and led the Penguins, 10-9, just five minutes into the game.

The Penguins, however, used a 15-2 runover the next eight minutes to take a 24-12 lead with 7:36 left.

Donlan paced the Penguins in the first half and made four the Penguins first eight field goals, including three 3-pointers. His second 3-pointer gave the Penguins a 12-10 lead and his third of the half put YSU up by 10, 20-10, with 9:59 to go.

Hain’s layup at the 7:36 mark gave the Penguins their largest of the half, 24-12, but Robert Morris held the Guins scoreless for nearly four minutes and used a 9-2 run to get within five, 26-21, with 3:25 left.

Hain hit a jumper and Donlan closed out the first-half scoring with his fourth 3-pointer and gave the Penguins a 31-23 lead at the intermission.

Neither team shot the ball well in the first half. YSU was just 12-of-33 for 36.4 percent while the Colonials went 9-of-27 for 33.3 percent from the floor. Six of the Penguins 12 made field goals were from behind the 3-point arc.

The Penguins host American, Friday, Dec. 4, at the Beeghly Center. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
