YOUNGSTOWN, OH (WYTV)-The Youngstown Phantoms topped the Des Moines Buccaneers 3-2 Saturday night thanks to a Vas Kolias goal with just 1.2 seconds left in regulation. It was Youngstown’s first weekend sweep since early October.
“I looked up at the clock and it was ticking down, less than six seconds, and I see Alvaro working his backside off to get the puck. I just slowly slid towards the net and I think they lost track of me. I was just the benefactor of an unbelievable effort by Alvy,” Kolias said.
The Phantoms struck first, with Chase Pearson scoring for the third consecutive game just over eight minutes into the contest. Pearson would add another just a few minutes later on the power play, his fifth of the season.
Des Moines would fight back to tie the game, behind goals from Howell and Hausinger. Hausinger’s tally tied the contest early in the third period.
The game seemed destined for overtime, until Phantoms Captain Matt Alvaro won a puck battle down low, and found Kolias in the high slot. Kolias’ shot beat Buccaneers goaltender Jan Ruzicka with just 1.2 seconds left in regulation.
“It just shows that we are a resilient group of guys, always fighting, and it’s starting to show up on the scoreboard,” said Kolias.
Youngstown goaltender Ryan Bednard continued his string of strong outings, turning away 23 of 25 Des Moines shot attempts.
“It’s very difficult to get a weekend sweep in this league, especially playing three games in four days, but what a finish. I’ve never won a game like that, it was incredible,” said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.
The Phantoms will hit the road this week for a three game swing. Youngstown will face the Chicago Steel Thursday night, then head to Sioux City, Iowa to take on the Musketeers Friday and Saturday.
