Special prosecutor to investigate Niles government corruption allegations

NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – Tuesday, Trumbull County Judge Andrew Logan approved a request for a special prosecutor to oversee allegations of illegal activity by government officials and others in Niles.

According to a court order obtained by WYTV, Daniel Kasaris of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office will oversee the investigation, per the request of Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins. Potential charges in the case include¬†tampering with evidence, theft in office, falsification and dereliction of duty.

The order did not specify who might be charged, simply calling them, “government officials and others.” No one has been charged so far in the investigation, which the state auditor’s office and attorney general’s office have been working on since 2014.
