KENT, Ohio (WYTV) – Throughout Ohio on Tuesday, in the 16 Congressional Districts around the state, Ohio’s Democratic Party elected delegates to the July national convention in Philadelphia.
They will pick the party’s nominee for president of the United States.
The delegate election for the 13th district — Rep. Tim Ryan’s district — was held in Kent. Regardless of the chosen nominee — Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders — the Mahoning Valley will be well represented.
“These are the activists of the activists that come out to these things,” Ryan said at the event.
People arrived at Kent Roosevelt High School in large groups on Tuesday night. One bus was full of Mahoning County Democrats.
“I’m interested in learning the process, and I want to support David Betras for delegate going to Philadelphia this summer,” said Scott McClain of Austintown.
Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Dave Betras was one of several candidates who campaigned for votes. Members of United Auto Workers 1112 were also well-represented, supporting Lordstown worker Karen Eusanio, who spoke at the 2012 convention.
“I believe strongly that we need more people in the labor force, showing what we need and what we can get out of this,” Eusanio said.
To attend Tuesday’s event, you had to be a registered Democrat living in Ohio’s 13th District.
Anne Garwig of Youngstown, who teaches at Youngstown State University, was one of the delegates selected to represent Bernie Sanders.
All of the delegates spoke briefly before the ballots were passed out.
Dave Betras received the most votes for men representing Hillary Clinton. Seven of the eight Clinton delegates were from either Mahoning or Trumbull counties.
“We sent out a bus, we brought people. That’s what we’re all about — organizing and getting out the vote, which is something I do and the Mahoning County party does very well,” Betras said.

Delegates for the Republican Convention have already been picked. That was done by the filing deadline for the candidates last month.
Whichever GOP candidate wins the Ohio primary, selected delegates will represent him or her.
In Ohio, there are 16 congressional districts, and each district gets three representatives. Ohio Republicans have a gender balance for delegates attending the convention.
“The even-numbered districts have two female and one male delegate. The odd number districts have two male and one female districts. The alternate delegate from each district are from opposite genders,” said Mahoning County Republican Party Chairman Mark Monroe.
Monroe will be serve as an alternate delegate for the 13 district for John Kasich.
