Battling flames, cold in New Middletown fire

Springfield Township firefighters helped the New Middletown department knock down the fire.

NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – New Middletown firefighters fought more than flames in a garage fire late Sunday night.

Crews were challenged by the cold temperatures and wind chill as they knocked the down the fire in a garage on East Middletown Road.

“That’s why you have to have extra firemen to rotate in and out,” says New Middletown Fire Chief Curt Brown. Springfield Township Fire Department also responded.

Departments do provide extra gear to keep warm, but it’s still quite a challenge.

“It’s really tough on firemen in this cold weather,” says Brown. “It ices up real quick.”

Crews were able to get the fire under control pretty quickly. “It looks like probably a wood burner,” says Brown. “We were the first one’s on-scene then Springfield was right behind us. So, everyone worked together good and we were able to get the fire out.”

An officer was patrolling the neighborhood when he saw flames coming from the garage. Police say that the officer got everyone out of the house that’s next to the garage.

No one was injured in the fire.
