NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – Niles announced Tuesday that it will lay off twelve employees to help save money, amidst ongoing financial difficulties.
The move, announced Tuesday in a press release from Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia, will include three firefighters, three police officers and six employees from other city departments.
“These layoffs are the most difficult decision we could possibly make, but the financial state of the city gives us no choice,” Scarnecchia said. “This is an emergency response to our ongoing state of fiscal emergency.”
The workers will be eligible for unemployment benefits, and Scarnecchia said that if voters approve a levy on the next ballot, the employees can return to work.
The release stated that the cuts will help with the city’s general fund, which is losing more than $90,000 a month, according to Scarnecchia.
