Man in court accused of punching Boardman cop and swallowing drugs

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – A man accused of punching a Boardman police officer and attempting to swallow a bag of heroin was arraigned Tuesday in Boardman District Court.

Darius Dates, 18, of Youngstown was charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, drug possession, tampering with evidence and taking the identity of another.

His bond was set at $26,500. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for March 1.

According to a police report, Boardman Police pulled over a car with three people in it on Sheridan Rd. late Friday night. The officer called for backup, saying the driver was trying to exit the car and he smelled marijuana.

Officers searched the car and reportedly found small amounts of marijuana.

One of the men, identified by police as Dates, exited the car and tried to swallow something, which police later identified as heroin, according to the police report. An officer ordered Dates to spit out the substance but he did not. As the officer tried to take Dates to the ground, he got free, and the officer eventually used a taser and tackled Dates. The officer also said that Dates punched him in the face and the officer punched him back before putting handcuffs on him.
