Cortland driver charged with striking pedestrian in Fowler Twp.

FOWLER TWP., Ohio (WYTV) – Charges have been filed against a driver accused of striking a pedestrian on Ridge Road in Fowler Township.

Russell Lauer III, 43, of Cortland, was charged with aggravated vehicular assault and felony leaving the scene of a crash. He was arrested at a family member’s home and taken to Trumbull County Jail on Monday evening.

Lauer is scheduled to be arraigned at Central District Court at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 2.

State Highway Patrol says Lauer was driving northbound on Ridge Road when he drove off the right side of the roadway and struck Brittany Szwedko, 27, of Cortland, as she was walking southbound. Lauer then left the scene, but he was detained by a witness and the Fowler Township Police Department.

Police said Lauer was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during the time of the crash.

Szwedko remains in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
