YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. (WYTV) – If you’re looking for a way to trim your waistline, then a daily dose of fiber could be what you are missing.
Fiber is part of the food received from plants and does not contain calories.
It does however have multiple other health benefits.
There are two kinds of fiber:
- Insoluble fiber, which is good for preventing constipation, lowering the fat absorption in the body, and reducing colon cancer.
- Soluble fiber, which can be seen in the diet, is good for lowering cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure.
It is beneficial for weight loss as it takes no energy but can reduce calorie intake by 30 percent.
By eating fiber, it can help fill you without adding calories, putting pressure on the wall of the stomach. This pressure triggers a special receptor in the stomach known as the stretch receptor. When pressure is put on this receptor, it sends a signal to the brain that the person has eaten and shuts down the hunger signal.
What other benefits does fiber have? What foods are rich with it?
Dr. Shayesteh joined 33 WYTV News Daybreak to discuss why fiber is essential for weight loss, which can be seen in the video above.
