Center for Community Empowerment distributes free computers

Computer giveaway Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Many students on Youngstown’s east side don’t have access to a computer once the school day ends.

The Center for Community Empowerment wanted to change that. It collected 40 used computers from a charity in Pittsburgh, and those computers were distributed to those in need on Thursday.

The group says it is focused on giving the computers to Latino families — a population that is growing on Youngstown’s east side.

“Realizing that many of them do not have computers at home, they have to study for the SATS, they have to do homework, and often times, they can’t get to the library,” said Rev. Willie Peterson, of the Center for Community Empowerment.

The center says it will have another event to give out computers at the end of April.
