YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A man convicted of sex crimes involving an 8-year-old victim was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences in prison.

Brian Griffin is eligible for parole after 50 years of his sentence. He was found guilty of eight counts of rape and eight counts of gross sexual imposition.

Griffin appeared in Judge Shirley Christian’s courtroom in Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas on Thursday.

The prosecutor asked for life in prison without parole and read a statement from the victim, in which the girl described the emotional pain of abuse.

The victim, who was 8 at the time of the first crime, was living with then 22-year-old Griffin, who is a relative. Investigators said the crimes happened between 2012 and 2013.

Griffin maintained his innocence and did not speak to court.

“The state sets some of the highest penalties for those convicted of raping a child…. Nobody that is in the courtroom the day that brave young girl testified wonders why,” Judge Christian said.

Christian added that Griffin showed no remorse for his behavior and is likely to re-offend.
