Poland, OH (WYTV) – Some may call Matt Baker a gentle giant. The Poland senior stands 6 foot 7, and is a big reason why the Bulldogs are in the District Semifinals. He may not be the most vocal leader, but he sets an example on and off the court…and that’s why he’s our Student Athlete of the Week.
“I’m more laid back, a little more of the quiet type,” said Baker. “We all have fun together and we all poke fun at each other and we all have a lot of fun.”
Matt is a quiet yet confident senior captain for the Bulldogs….averaging 15 points and 8 rebounds, while logging the most minutes played on the court.
“I’m the stretch four like Kevin Love I guess,” he said. “Ya, step out and shoot the three, get in the post, do a few post moves that my dad taught me, and I play defense really hard.”
Matt’s brother David was also known for his tough play at Poland…he was 33 Student Athlete of the Week himself back in 2010.
“Ya, we’ll be together on the wall Student Athletes of the Week and I always watched. I was a ball boy when he played so I always wanted to follow in his footsteps and here are I am today.”
In his words, Matt is also a “tricky lefty” on the mound…helping the Bulldogs reach the State Championship game last year. He’s also spot on the classroom, with a 3.95 GPA, and wants to become a teacher and coach himself one day.
“Being a student, you know I think it’s really important working hard and I really think it translates to the basketball court a whole lot,” said Baker. “I’ve had a great four years here and you know our bonds will never be broken with this family we’ve created.”
