YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics made a historical purchase Friday to expand its Youngstown campus.
The property was previously owned by the Western Reserve Port Authority.
Its building next to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport will also be undergoing a $1.3 million expansion, in addition to the purchase.
The school currently has about 40 students, and it hopes the expansion will allow the school to have closer to 100 students.
School directors said the Port Authority selling them the property was a means of commitment to the economic development of the Mahoning Valley.
“They were definitely willing, it’s good for the community, it’s good for the airport, it’s good for the Youngstown Warren region,” PIA Campus Director David Mitchell said.
PIA expects to break ground in April for the planned two-story facility. It will feature new technology for classrooms and specialized shop areas for different aircraft systems.
