WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – Dozens attended the third annual “Hope for Recovery from Addiction” event in Warren on Saturday night to share their stories and support one another.
The Trumbull County Opiate Task Force helped organize the program. The goal is to teach family and friends of those affected by substance abuse about addiction, and provide them with tools and resources to help their loved ones.
Lauren Thorp from the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention says addiction doesn’t just affect the individual using.
“There is really this ripple effect, and with addiction where it’s so different than so many other diseases, is that the family members don’t even have to take the drugs and they’re affected…We’re talking about children whose parents are unable to parent them because of their addiction.”
Organizers say heroin addiction seems to be the biggest substance abuse issue facing families now.
