YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Several local police departments are participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications and/or patches can be disposed of at several locations. Needles, liquids and medical waste will not be accepted.

The goal of the event, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, is to limit the potential for misuse and abuse, as well as proper disposal of the drugs to limit harm to the environment. The DEA says medicines that are left in the home are at risk for theft, misuse and abuse; and rates of prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high.

Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them away in the trash is not recommended because of potential safety and health hazards.

The service is free and anonymous.
