Work delayed on Canfield bridge, confusion on closing

There has been a delay in the Route 46 bridge work in Canfield, Ohio.

CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – The Route 46 overpass in Canfield over the Ohio Turnpike is closed, with road blocks already set up.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said the work should begin May 16.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is overseeing the project because both state roads and roads overseen by the Ohio Turnpike Commission are involved in the work.

The work will require Route 46 to be closed, and the Cardinal Joint Fire District already initiated changes to accommodate the shutdown in traffic. More runs have been assigned to crews at Station 2 on Messerly Road to cover emergency service.

“They will now cover down Shields Road, Herbert, and down onto Route 46 where our main station did cover,” said Deputy Chief Matt Rarick.

Posted detours will send commercial traffic up Route 11 toward Austintown, but local traffic is likely to used winding residential side streets, most with speed limits of 25 miles per hour.

“They need to really pay attention more as they are going through these areas they are not familiar driving,” Rarick said.

Businesses on either said of the overpass have been bracing themselves and their customers for the shutdown. Tyler Rust, with the Phoenix Grill and Bar, said his customers have already started asking questions.

“We’ve had a few customers ask about our hours or if we are going to change anything. We just reassure them that we still have the same hours. We are still going to be open every day throughout the week,” Rust said.

The Route 46 Bridge over the Ohio Turnpike is the second of four closures scheduled for the Canfield area. Raccoon Road recently re-opened following road work, and later the overpasses on Herbert Road and Route 225 are set to close later this spring.
