Akron Children’s recognizes donors, volunteers at awards dinner

POLAND, Ohio (WYTV) – Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley held its 6th annual Champions for our Valley’s Children awards banquet on Tuesday night.

The hospital honored its donors and volunteers at a dinner at the Lake Club in Poland. YSU President Jim Tressel was the guest speaker.

The top award this year went to local McDonald’s owner Herb Washington and the Ronald McDonald House Charities. The organization funds family centers located on both the Beeghley and St. Elizabeth’s Boardman campuses.

“These are facilities that are homelike. They provide sleeping rooms, private bathrooms, showers, kitchen, living room area, sibling playroom, all at no charge for the parents of the patient staying at the hospital,” said JoAnn Stock, Senior Director of Development.

Laura Elder of Canfield also gave a heartwarming speech about how the hospital has been a big help with her daughter’s health problems. Elizabeth, 11, has undergone three surgeries and had to learn how to walk twice.

Six individuals and organizations were also given the Children’s Advocate Award.
