Preliminary report released on Carroll County plane crash

CARROLL CO., Ohio (WYTV) – A preliminary report has been released on an investigation into a Carroll County plane crash in April.

Willard Olds, 83, took off around 3 p.m. April 24 from the Salem Air Park on Sunday in a Cessna 182L plane. His body and plane were discovered around 9:45 a.m. April 29 in Mechanicstown, about 30 miles from Salem.

A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board found that Olds crashed 15 minutes after taking off from the Tolson Airport in Carrollton, Ohio. He left the airport at 6 p.m. April 24.

Olds’ plane struck trees and terrain near Carrollton on his flight back to the Salem Air Park.

The plane was unable to be found for several days, and Olds was reported missing on April 27. Investigators discovered the plane after tracking Olds’ cell phone, according to the report.
