YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Twelve scholarships, totaling $108,000, were awarded to graduating high school seniors on Wednesday.
The scholarships were funded by the Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Fund. Throughout the past 19 years, more than $750,000 scholarships were awarded through the scholarship fund.
The scholarships were given out by Denise DeBartolo York during a luncheon at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. Twelve students from across the Mahoning Valley received scholarships.
“It really, really does make me feel wonderful, and you know, John is a real big proponent of education,” DeBartolo York said. “It puts everybody on an even playing field, and also to think that my dad started this and my mom was a teacher, it’s a great day for me.”
More than 400 applications were received, and recipients were determined by academic achievement, community involvement and financial need. There was more money available for scholarships this year, making this group of recipients the largest ever, thanks to an improving stock market and economy.
