Newton Falls hires replacement for retiring fire chief

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio (WYTV) – The Newton Falls Joint Fire District hired a new chief to replace the retiring Chief Rick Bauman.

Anita Smith, who grew up in the Newton Falls area, will be sworn in on May 24.

Smith has over 25 years of firefighting experience, including 14 years in leadership roles.

She is currently employed as a paramedic with University Hospital in Twinsburg, Ohio. Smith was also employed as a firefighter with Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Services in Nevada.

Board Chairman Zach Svette said her combination of technical expertise, firefighting experience, station management and leadership skills and experience made her the best candidate for the job.

The board also said that Smith presented an impressive strategic plan for the district’s future and understands the problems it is facing.
