WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – Warren Police are investigating a photo of a Warren G. Harding High School student which has caused alarm after circulating on social media.
The student appears to be holding a gun in the high school’s bathroom.
School leaders found out about the Facebook post early Tuesday morning and called the school resource officer to investigate. The student wasn’t allowed to come to school on Tuesday, and the officer went over to his house first thing Tuesday morning.
The superintendent confirms the picture is a Harding student and said it might have been taken on school property.
“The principal and school resource officer went to the [student’s] house, met with the parent, met with the student, and you know, ensured that there was not going to be any kind of problems over at the school,” said Warren City Schools Superintendent Steve Chiaro.
Chiaro said an investigation revealed that the gun wasn’t a real weapon, rather it was a look alike. But, he said, the principal will determine whether the student faces discipline, and a due process hearing and potentially an expulsion hearing will be held.
“If it’s a look-alike weapon, if it is a real weapon… that’s the kind of post that’s going on social media and we’re made aware of it, we address it immediately, because that’s something that we just don’t tolerate,” he said.
He said he believes the investigation is being handled appropriately and that the safety of the students was never in jeopardy. He stressed that parents should contact the district whenever anything like this occurs.
“In this case, our protocol worked exactly as it should,” he said. “[We] ensured that there was not going to be any kind of problems over at the school.”
