Fourth vacant house this week catches fire in Sharon

SHARON, Pa. (WYTV) – Another vacant house caught on fire in Sharon Thursday night, the fourth in just the last week.

Sharon and Hermitage fire crews responded to the scene at New Castle Avenue and Orchard Street around 9:30 p.m. The house is on the east side of the Shenango River and a few blocks south of State Street.

Two nights ago, there were three vacant house fires in the city. Fire Chief Robert Fiscus suspects arson in those cases.

The fire department is small and can’t handle the extra calls. Before Thursday night, 26 houses caught fire this year, which is more than one each week.

Fiscus says the city has about 200 vacant homes, but only has the funding to tear down ten a year. Those that burn will likely stay standing, adding to more blight in the neighborhood.
