Mill Creek’s Lily Pond reopens after second phase of improvements

The park wanted to "improve the habitat, the appeal and the accessibility" of the pond.

The Mill Creek lily pond reopened after its second phase of improvements.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Lily Pond at Mill Creek Park reopened Monday with some brand new features.

The pond had been closed for its second phase of improvements since April.

The new parking lot was finished just before Memorial Day, and includes permeable pavers and a bio filtration area that will filter rain water from the surface into the pond.

Other improvements include a boardwalk leading to an observation deck, upgraded trails and new plants.

“The introduction of native wetland plants, the functionality of the parking lot, making it better served to treat storm water so close to the Lily Pond. We really wanted to improve the habitat, the appeal and the accessibility,” said Planning Manager Justin Rogers.

The pond facility now follows ADA Accessibility requirements, meaning those in wheelchairs and walkers are better able to access it. Families with children in strollers will also have an easier time accessing the pond.
