YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – You might have gotten a new radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip card from your bank, they’re supposed to be harder for thieves to steal.
But, high-tech thieves developed portable scanners that can steal credit card information at a distance. So, last year, the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office started passing out card sleeves that can block the scanners.
“It’s hard to gauge how effective they really are because we’re not sure how many of those types of skimmers are out there. It certainly is another step towards protecting yourself,” said Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene.
The Sheriff’s Department still has a few card sleeves left.
