Crews worked to clean up Shields Road on Friday morning after a tree fell on a car, taking down power lines in the area

Shields Road in Boardman Township was closed after a tree fell on a man who was driving down the road.

BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio (WYTV) – It was 2:30 a.m. when Ron Blatt, Sr. got heard a knock on his door.

“I immediately thought something was wrong with somebody,” said Blatt, who quickly rushed to the door.

Blatt said that was when Boardman Police officers told him his son, Ronnie, was in an accident.

Ron Blatt, Sr. quickly rushed to the scene of the accident on Shields Road, where a tree was down. On the other side of the tree was his son’s car.

Ronnie told police he was traveling westbound on Shields Road when he saw a flash of light. The tree then began to fall, but Blatt couldn’t hit his brakes fast enough — it struck the hood of his car.

Blatt estimated he was driving approximately 35 miles per hour at the time of the crash. Luckily, he had only minor injuries.

Half a second later, Ronald Blatt said it could have been a lot worse.

“If it would have fell a half a second later, my son probably wouldn’t be here today,” he said.

The tree that fell is in Mill Creek Park. The park didn’t have a comment on what is done to make sure incidents like this don’t happen.

The tree also struck a power line, causing it to spark and burn, and it pulled a phone line down.

Crews worked to clean up the area on Friday morning and restore power to some in the area who experienced an outage.
