COLUMBUS, Ohio (WYTV) – Ohio is reporting its first case of the Zika virus contracted through sexual transmission.

A 61-year-old woman from Lucas County tested positive for the virus.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, the woman’s husband traveled to a country with Zika and also tested positive.

The Center for Disease Control recommends that couples in which the man has confirmed Zika virus or symptoms of the infection wait six months before having unprotected sex. If the woman is pregnant, this applies for the duration of the pregnancy.

It says if the man travels to a country with Zika and returns with no symptoms, couples should still consider waiting eight weeks before having unprotected sex.

There are now 16 confirmed cases of Zika in Ohio.
