First of summer seminar series to focus on juvenile drug addiction

The "Understanding Addiction" seminar will be held June 30 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Drake's Landing in Canfield

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Administrators with the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center will be holding a series of seminars this summer focusing on a number of issues facing young people.

The first in the series, entitled “Understanding Addiction,” will focus on the causes and other factors leading to drug abuse and dependency, and various treatment programs that are available.

Magistrate Anthony D’Apolito is also the director of the Center’s Drug Court program and says addictions affecting children eventually victimize the rest of their families as well.

“Whether the family wants to or not, they’re going to get caught up in this whirlpool of emotion, of confusion, of anger, of blame and it’s…helping families deal with all the different things they’re going to go through in helping their juvenile.”

The first program will be held June 30 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the cost is $50.

The featured presenter is Dr. Brad Lander, the Clinical Director of the Addiction Medicine Department at The Ohio State University Wexnar Medical Center.

Future programs will focus on grief, racism and other problems for young people, their families and the community.
