Doubledays race past Scrappers

Costly errors ended up being the difference for the Scrappers in a 4-2 loss Wednesday

Niles, OH (WYTV) – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers committed their league high 21st and 22nd errors of the season on Wednesday night. Those errors would allow the Auburn Doubledays to come from behind to top the Scrappers 4-2 at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers would jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Erlin Cerda would launch a leadoff homerun, his first of the season, to put the Scrappers up 1-0.

Cerda would strike again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Michael Tinsley singled to start the inning for his first professional hit. Cerda would then drive him in with an RBI triple to centerfield to put the Scrappers up 2-0. It would be the final baserunner of the night for the Scrappers as the final 15 batters would be retired in order.

In the top of the sixth inning Auburn would get a run on an RBI groundout by Tres Berrera who drove in Ryan Ripken. Ripken tripled with one out.

With two outs and one runner on base in the top of the seventh inning, the Scrappers would walk three straight batters. The final walk coming with the bases loaded to tie the game 2-2.

The Doubledays would get the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Berrera was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and a strike out, Jake Jefferies would ground to Cerda at second. The throw to first was dropped by Emmanuel Tapia, allowing Auburn to score the go ahead run.

Auburn would then add an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. With one out Sheldon Neuse, Ripken and Berrera would all single with Berrera driving in Neuse to push the score out to the final of 4-2.

Juan Hillman started for Mahoning Valley and went 4.0 innings. He allowed no runs on three hits. Hillman walked two and struck out three. Michael Letkewicz and Randy Valladares would combine for 2.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on two hits. Letkewicz walked one and struck out one while Valladares walked two. Ping Hsueh Chen (0-1) would take the loss in 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed just one unearned run on zero hits. He walked one and struck out two.

The Scrappers (3-10) and Doubledays (8-5) will finish their three game series on Thursday night at 7:05pm. Luis Jimenez (0-1) will look to get the Scrappers their first series win of the season.
