East Palestine splash pad brings in more people, money for the city

A local splash pad is breaking records for attendance

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WYTV) – Splash pads and water playgrounds are popular places for children, especially during the middle of summer.

The East Palestine splash pad has been open for a little over a year now and they are seeing a huge spike in attendance.

“We broke record numbers last year, and actually this year to date we’re on pace to break records from last year,” said Pete Montelone, East Palestine’s city manager.

This comes at a time when several community pools in Columbiana County were forced to close due to lack of funding.

“In this day and age, when a lot of our other localities around us are having trouble keeping public swimming pools open, East Palestine is proud because we have made a great effort to revitalize the pool,” Montelone said.

The warm weather and the 4th of July weekend have provided the perfect backdrop for people to get out and head to the East Palestine pool, and one feature has been pretty popular this summer.

“The splash pad has been a really great addition to our pool, we get a lot of people from other communities coming with their little ones,” said Terri Ward, an East Palestine pool employee.

Interactive water features have become popular alternatives to swimming pools in public parks.

“Kids that are too small for the pool, they have fun in the splash pad, and it’s easier for the moms to keep track of them too,” Ward said.

The record number of attendance has also generated more funding for the East Palestine City Park.
