Niles, OH (WYTV) – For the first time in 2016, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers earned their first two game winning streak and first series win with a 5-3 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats.
Gabriel Mejia and Silento Sayles got the Scrappers off to a fast start on Wednesday night with back to back triples to start the bottom of the first inning with Mejia scoring on Sayles’ triple. With one out, Erlin Cerda doubled the lead with an RBI double to bring in Sayles for a 2-0 lead. Cerda would also score on a Logan Ice RBI sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
The ValleyCats would cut the Scrappers lead to just one run in the top of the third inning. With one out Alex DeGoti was hit by a pitch. Ryne Birk followed with a single. Then with two outs, Chuckie Robinson doubled to drive in both runners to cut the ValleyCats deficit to 3-2.
Mahoning Valley added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out Andrew Calica walked and moved to third on an Ice double. Then with the infield pulled, Emmanuel Tapia chopped a two run single over the head of DeGoti at short to push the Scrappers lead to 5-2.
Tri-City made the game close in the ninth. Taylor Jones started the inning with a solo homerun to pull Tri-City within two runs. After a one out single would allow the tying run to come to the plate, DeGoti and Birk struck out back to back to end the game.
Micah Miniard (1-2) earned the win with 6.0 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out five. Dace Kime would follow with 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed one hit and one walk. Argenis Angulo would also go a scoreless inning. He struck out one. Ping-Hsueh Chen would go 0.2 of the ninth inning. He allowed one earned run on two hits. Chen struck out two. Randy Valladares (1) earned the save with a strikeout of the only batter he faced to end the game.
The Scrappers (8-18) now head to State College to start a six game road trip with the Spikes and Auburn Doubledays. The team returns home on Thursday July 21st to take on the Lowell Spinners.
