An investigation is underway into "alleged illegal activity" involving Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith, according to a judgment entry signed by Trumbull County Court Judge Andrew Logan.

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – An investigation is underway into “alleged illegal activity” involving Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith, according to a judgment entry signed by Trumbull County Court Judge Andrew Logan.

Prosecutor Dennis Watkins said the investigation is being handled by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and Ohio Ethics Commission. He had no comment on the ongoing investigation.

Smith is being investigated for allegations of having an unlawful interest in a public contract and for possible violations of the Ohio Ethics Law for Public Officials, according to the court entry.

A special prosecutor is handling the case.

Smith declined to comment on the investigation, referring all questions to his attorney. Smith’s attorney did not return a call for a comment on Friday.
