Canfield, OH (WYTV) – The Canfield football team is back atop the All American Conference. For the first time in 10 years, the Cardinals won an outright division crown last season. They also punched their first ticket to the postseason since 2009. Safe to say, that same confidence is back for 2016.
Head Coach Mike Pavlansky is back for a 16th season with the Cardinals. He’s got 72 players out, with 6 returners on offense and 5 on defense. Senior Jake Cummings leads the way under center. He racked up 13 touchdowns and over 12 hundred yards of offense in his first full season as a starter.
A young offensive line will have to step up. Senior Mason Giordano sets the tone in the trenches as a 3 year starter. He went for 46 tackles and 4 sacks last season. No doubt, underclassmen will need to step up for a return trip to the postseason.
“Getting back to the playoffs, winning the league title was huge for our senior class,” said Pavlansky. “This senior class has a done a great job of leading throughout the winter time and we’re expecting the same thing through the summer time. Obviously you need to stay healthy, you’ve gotta grow every day on the field and get better every day and every week. We’re gonna be real young up front on the offensive line and as soon as those guys come along we’ll be OK.”
“Our mentality is always next man up,” said Cummings. “Our coaches are going to get our guys ready. We’re going to be ready to step in and you know we got some big shoes to fill but we’re ready for it.”
