Champion man killed in Atwater Township crash

Family members say the Champion man was married just two days before the crash

ATWATER TWP., Ohio (WYTV) – A Trumbull County man was killed in a crash in Atwater Township on Monday afternoon.

Family members say Derek Speicher was married just two days before the crash. They say the couple is from Champion and have lived locally all of their lives.

According to the Ravenna Post of Ohio State Highway Patrol, Speicher was traveling east on US 224 when his 2005 Honda CRV was struck by a 2014 Buick Verano, which traveled left of center and struck the Honda head on.

The driver of the Buick was identified as 64-year-old Susan Owens, of Youngstown. She was taken to Akron City Hospital by Life Flight with life-threatening injuries. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Highway Patrol said the drivers were not wearing seat belts. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
