Youngstown City Schools hosts book bag giveaway

About 1,500 book bags were given away to children in kindergarten through 12th grade

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Hundreds of children and parents got into the back-to-school spirit Saturday with free backpacks stuffed with school supplies.

The giveaway happened outside the Covelli Centre, courtesy of Youngstown City Schools, C.I.R.V. (Community Initiative to Reduce Violence) and Now Youngstown.

The groups wanted to help parents with the cost of sending their kids back to school; about 1,500 book bags were given away to children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Food, music, student performances and social and educational services for families were available.

Event leaders said the event was about pumping parents and kids up for the upcoming school year.

“We want to make sure that all the children here are educated properly, so that they can do well and be successful in life. It helps with violence, it helps with poverty, it helps with everything,” said C.I.R.V. Director Guy Burney.

Event leaders also said they hope events like this will help promote peace and unity within the Youngstown community.
