STRONGSVILLE, Ohio (WYTV) – Corey Carbone, a 20-year-old student at Youngstown State University, captured the Men’s Novice National Figure Skating Championship over the weekend.
Carbone is part of the Youngstown Phantoms Figure Skating Club.
He beat out more than 20 skaters from across the country and brought home the first gold medal of his career.
“It was very unexpected,” said Carbone. “I still don’t have any words for it. it was very shocking to me. I remember seeing the scores posted and finally seeing that I was first. This is probably one of the competitions, well one of the only competitions I have gotten first at.”
