Boardman wins thriller over Mooney

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Boardman Spartans scored twice in the final two minutes to shock Cardinal Mooney at Stambaugh Stadium Friday night.

With Boardman leading 7-0, Cardinal Mooney’s Alex Sepesy scored a 2 yard touchdown run with 3:56 left in the 1st quarter to close the gap to 7-6.

Mooney took their first lead of the game with 11:40 remaining in the second quarter when Ray Anderson scored on a 76 yard touchdown reception from Antonio Page. Following a successful 2 point conversion, the Cardinals led 14-7.

With 5:39 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Jaylen Hewlett scored from five yards out to extend the Mooney lead to 20-7.

Boardman’s Mike O’Horo scored from eight yards out to close the gap to 20-14 with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Rayn Anderson scored again, this time on an 11 yard run with 11:19 remaining in the game to give Mooney a 26-14 lead.

Boardman scored with 1:53 remaining in the game to pull within five, but needed a successful onside kick to have a chance. They got it.

The Spartans drove the field and scored a game-winning touchdown with just :14 left in the game to cap a tremendous comeback.

Boardman (2-0) will host Jackson in week three. Cardinal Mooney (1-1) will host Akron North.
