STRUTHERS, Ohio (WYTV) – A Struthers man is still recovering after firefighters and EMTs worked tirelessly to revive him when his house caught fire late Tuesday morning.
George Gould was being treated at the UPMC Mercy burn unit in Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon, but his condition is unknown.
Multiple fire departments were called out to the Broad Street home on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters found Gould in the stairwell by the front door after they were able to get into the house.
Neighbors said they performed CPR on Gould before he was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital by ambulance.
“They pulled him down into the front yard and waited for the ambulance to come,” said neighbor Melanie Rauschenbach.
John McCoy, who lives nearby, said the neighborhood is a tight-knit community.
“It’s devastating to see it’s in my neighborhood, to know a family in my neighborhood lost everything is kinda devastating for everyone, because this is a close neighborhood,” he said.
Struthers firefighter Tom Lallo said the humidity took its toll on fire crews.
“Between the heat, getting in there and CPR on him, me being a little older, the heat got to me, and… I had to back off and let somebody else help out,” he said.
Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire but believe it started in a back bedroom of the house.
