Fire crews battle barn fire at Amish farm supply in Mesopotamia

MESOPOTAMIA, Ohio (WYTV) – Multiple fire departments in northern Trumbull County were called out to fight a large barn fire on Friday morning.

Crews were sent to D&S Farm and Garden Supply, in the 4700 block of Gates East Rd., just after 9 a.m. The fire burned for hours as about eight departments and the Trumbull County Water Shuttle Service worked to put it out.

The farmer had almost 3,000 bales of hay and straw in the building. There are no hydrants anywhere near the farm, so the local fire departments have found ways around that problem with the Water Shuttle.

“Whenever there is a large fire in a neighboring community, we activate that, because the rural departments don’t have a water system. So we have to truck the water in,” said Bloomfield Fire Chief Matthew Baker.

There’s no word yet on what started the fire.

There were no injuries reported. There were horses in the barn at the time of the fire, but they got out OK.
