Leetonia, OH (WYTV) – Football is all about toughness and Leetonia’s Michael Buffone certainly fits that bill. He’s a 4 year starter and senior captain for the Bears football team, a regular on both sides of the ball. Plus, he leads the way in the classroom, earning Michael the honor of our Student Athlete of the Week.
“My school and football is sort of the same, I put the same effort in at school and football, even though I put school first and then football,” said Buffone. “It’s sort of the same mindset for both things.”
Michael is book smart and football smart. He’s played all over the field at Leetonia. This year, he converted from guard to fullback and also plays linebacker.
“Every year I seem to be put somewhere different and wherever they need me, that’s where I go,” he said. “I’m just here to help, wherever I can fit in best to help the team.”
Safe to say, Michael’s a fast learner. He’s put up 231 yards on 41 carries already this season, as the Bears continue to improve on both sides of the ball.
“We look to improve every week,” said Buffone. “We had the new offense last year and this year, we started understanding it a lot more. so each week we just keep trying to get better until it clicks. I think it’s gonna click. I wouldn’t count us out.”
If Michael’s not on the football field, he’s probably studying. He ranks 1st in his senior class with a 4.0 GPA and is a member of many, including National Honor Society.
“Some of my friends come up to me, and be like, ‘Man, how do you get straight a’s and still do football and have all the time for everything?’ I’m like, you just gotta manage your time wisely and put priorities first.”
