AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Runners with both two legs and four took to Austintown Park Saturday for the Brittany Szwedko Memorial 5K Run and Dog Walk.
On Feb. 27, 27-year-old Szwedko was hit and killed by an intoxicated driver while training for a half-marathon. Since then, a scholarship fund has been set up at Youngstown State University in her honor.
Her mother, Mary Kay Szwedko, said she couldn’t be more thankful for the event, which saw nearly 300 people participate. The pet-friendly run was made possible through a partnership with Legacy Dog Rescue.
“I wanna thank everyone from Legacy, to the friends that helped organize this, [to the] the sponsors, the donors, my co-workers, Brittany’s co-workers — everyone,” Mary Kay Szwedko said.
